Remembering The Poor – A Short Biblical Reflection On The Importance Of Almsgiving

Posted in: Featured, Prayer & Devotions

This is a short presentation on the importance of always providing, caring and being of service to the poor. Scripture tells us clearly that caring for the poor should be at the heart of every Christian. This time of year, we especially remember the poor, vulnerable and those marginalised in our community.

May we be the hands of Our Lord Jesus Christ to bring them comfort, in the ways that we can. .

BIBLICAL TEACHINGS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF ALMSGIVING

1. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me. Matthew 25: 34-36

2. As water quenches a flaming fire , so almsgiving atones for sins. Sirach 3:29

3. Sell what you have and give alms. Wherever your treasure lies , there your heart will be. Luke 12:33-34

4. It is better to give alms than to store up gold. Almsgiving saves one from death and expiates every sin. Tobit 12:8-9

5. How can God’s love survive in a man who has enough of this world’s goods yet closes his heart to his brother when he sees him in need? 1 John 3:17

6. He who oppresses the poor blasphemes his Maker, but he who is kind to the needy glorifies him. Proverbs 14:31

7. Keep your deeds of mercy secret, and your Father who sees in secret will repay you. Matthew 6:4
